I decided to take this class before Theatre History I because I was really excited to see that we would learn about Chinese and Japanese theatre history. Even with that unit and a play from South America in the first week, I felt like the class didn't give enough time to things outside of European history. It's something we really have to work on in theatre in general. But there were important discussions about the possible errors or deliberate omissions of translation that were brought up.
I was most interested in the history of scenic design and we learned a lot about that. Seeing how much scenic design changed in just a few years with one or two designers making big steps makes me think about the future of scenic design now. Back then, they couldn't have imagined having multiple points of perspective in a set or having set pieces in the playing space at center stage. It's fun to think about what we can't imagine now that will be normal in the future.
