This was a series of assignments based on a song. The first task was to come up with a way to describe the structure of the song. I don't have the language to talk very in depth about music so I chose to show the structure visually. The picture above is the song Sufoco, transcribed in color and shape. It was really cool to be able to literally see how the song builds over time. Then, from there we had to start to think about the song from a designer's perspective.
The first step was to create a moodboard, which is shown above. The purpose is to turn any ideas and concepts into pictures that show the feeling of the play (or song in this case). I was able to get across the idea of repetition, cycles, and being trapped all in one collage of images. This moodboard will go on to inform any future designs for this song. The set will draw inspiration from the pictures I collected for this one thing. The same is true for costumes below.
All of this is very good practice for me, as this kind of communicating concepts through images is something that l I'll be doing as a designer for any show I do in the future. Practicing using tools like moodboards is important for me and it allows me to get better at narrowing down my ideas to show the world I want to create through a small collection of images.
The final project was to actually create that world. I worked with Ruby to actually design a set and then create a model of it. I used all of the projects that had come before, the structured image and the moodboards, to draw inspiration from and to inform the design. In the end, we were able to create a full set from a simple song. The rest of the class wasn't very helpful but I really enjoyed this series of assignments because I got to apply things I actually hope to be doing in the future.
